Hyderabad: Residents raised concerns about water stagnation and flooding caused by clogged drains during an inspection of stormwater drains by GHMC K. commissioner K. Ilambarithi in Yakutpura and Ganganagar on Wednesday, accompanied by Yakutpura MLA Jaffer Hussain and senior officials.
The team visited Rangeli Khidki, Hussaini Kothi Palace, Maulana Chilla, Ganganagar and Rein Bazaar. At Rangeli Khidki, officials observed sewage overflow and explained that the Ganganagar drain, built during the Nizam’s era, had been overflowing since the last monsoon. The commissioner ordered a detailed survey and sought a comprehensive report.
At Maulana Chilla, the commissioner found that drain repairs had been delayed for three years. He directed the contractor to complete the work immediately. In Rein Bazaar, residents reported that rainwater was getting trapped in the existing box drain, leading to waterlogging in homes. The MLA informed him that a Rs 1.6-crore proposal had been submitted to resolve the issue. The commissioner instructed engineering officials to submit a report and begin work once the tender process was completed.
Ilambarithi also emphasised the need for a stormwater drain master plan to systematically develop and maintain Hyderabad’s drainage network. He noted that Rs 545 crore had been allocated for the second phase of the Strategic Nala Development Plan (SNDP) and directed officials to complete all pending drainage works in the Old City before the next monsoon.
