Today, on the 2nd Friday of December, many schools and universities celebrate Purple Friday, Paarse Vrijdag in Dutch.
It is a day about diversity, inclusion, and respect: that everyone may be who they are, feel safe and respected, and that they may love the people they love.
On this day, many teachers and students wear purple to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, and stand against LGBTQ+ bullying and discrimination. The color purple in the rainbow flag stands for ‘spirit’, and often this day is also called Spirit Day.
Purple Friday first originated in Canada in 2010 after a large increase of bullying, discrimination, and even suicide cases among gay teenagers. Of course everyone is free to wear purple. The most important thing is that everyone feels they can be themselves.
