10th-ranked Chennaiyin FC and ninth-placed Punjab FC, two teams in dire need of victory, will face off in an Indian Super League fixture at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Saturday.
While Chennaiyin (21 points) has four games left in its league season, Punjab (24) is in a slightly advantageous position with one extra match in hand.
Head coach Owen Coyle admitted that CFC has not fared well at home — it has lost four, drew four and won just one — and that is one thing he would like to focus on.
“But we want to finish strong. We want to put a smile on supporters’ faces and win those (three) home games. But to do that, we need to be at our very best. We have not done well in home games. We finished really strong last year and made it to the playoffs,” he said at a press conference here on Friday.
The 58-year-old Scot praised Punjab FC management for picking some good young players such as defenders Rakesh Singh (22), Abhishek Singh (20), midfielder Ricky John Shabong (22) and forward Muhammad Suhail (18).
On taking on Chennaiyin, Punjab head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis said: “It’s a huge challenge for us. We have to take one step at a time.”
