Background & Professional Journey

Dr. Pope’s robust professional journey began at the University of Western Ontario (UWO), where she pursued her MD and Fellowship in Internal Medicine. A quest for deeper knowledge led her to Boston University for a Fellowship in Rheumatology and a Master’s in Public Health, followed by a Canadian Arthritis Society Research Fellowship in Scleroderma.

Today, she’s a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology and Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Western Ontario. She also heads the Rheumatology Division at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, London.

Work and Accomplishments

Dr. Pope’s areas of research and interest are multifaceted, encompassing systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), scleroderma, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). She’s significantly contributed to these fields, with over 200 peer-reviewed articles, 11 chapters, 300 abstracts, and several Cochrane meta-analysis reviews. Aside from her active research involvement, Dr. Pope’s a prominent figure in numerous national and international initiatives. She holds key positions in the Canadian Scleroderma Research Group (CSRG), Canadian Network for Improved Outcomes in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (CaNIOS), and Canadian Rheumatology Research Consortium (CRRC). Additionally, she’s a medical advisor for Lupus Ontario and a recipient of their prestigious Lupus Hope Award.

Dr. Pope’s tireless work on systemic sclerosis has been particularly influential, with her contributions spanning the description of disease manifestations, development of outcome measures, definition of classification criteria, exploration of antibodies, and investigation of potential treatments. Her epidemiologic studies, including a significant cluster analysis in Southwestern Ontario, have also played a crucial role in understanding the prevalence of scleroderma.

When she’s not revolutionizing our understanding of systemic sclerosis, you’ll find Dr. Pope mentoring the next generation of rheumatologists. Since 1993, she’s guided the academic and professional development of 89 students, aptly nicknamed “Pope’s pups,” many of whom have made significant contributions to rheumatology.
