All set for Poonawalla Breeders’ Multi-Million on Feb. 23

The 36th edition of the Poonawalla Breeders’ Multi-Million (PBMM) will take place at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse at 6 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 23).

Since its inception in 1990, the ‘Juvenile Derby,’ has continued to raise the bar, making it one of the most thrilling and competitive contests in Indian horse racing. This year’s total prize money is ₹1.5 crore with a winner’s purse of ₹90 lakh.

Zavaray S. Poonawalla told The Hindu that “the very first running of PBMM was curated in such a way that it attracted a huge crowd with style & panache and remains so! We aim to make it bigger & better, increasing stakes from ₹1 million to ₹15 million and I hope to take it up to ₹50 million in the very near future.”

Racegoers in the Members and First Enclosures can participate in a Free Contest of Skill to predict the top four finishers of PBMM and win exciting prizes including a Toyota Glanza, a scooter, a smart TV, and a laptop. Free food coupons worth ₹200, free entry for ladies, food stalls, a flea market, and merchandise add to the occasion.

Among the 16 contenders in fray, the Bengaluru-based horses are poised to dominate the finish. Trainer Prasanna Kumar’s star colt, Prokofiev, who showcased an impressive victory in the Breeders’ Produce Stakes, appears to be in top form, as evidenced by his morning workouts and should score an encore.

Miracle Star, trained by S. Padmanabhan, who put up a commendable effort when finishing second behind Big Bay is likely to relish the extended 1400m trip. Circle of Dreams from S. Attaollahi’s yard is in good shape and could pose a serious threat. Aravind Ganapathy’s charge, Magnetar, a dual winner in Bengaluru, may spring a surprise.

Among the local talent, Malesh Narredu’s duo Gunsmoke and Big Bay may add pep to the finish while P. Shroff-schooled Red Bishop could pull off an upset.
